The beauty of Paint Plot paint by number’s is that you will get everything you need for a perfect painting every time, everything else is just a bonus!
You might decide to begin with a very simple set up when you first start painting and then introduce more accessories as you complete more paintings.
We’ve shared quite a few blogs about tips, tricks and the best paint by number kits for beginners. Here, we’ve collected the best instructions for Paint Plot customers who have starting out.
Our five most frequently asked questions about Paint Plot Instructions and advice are:
- Which paint by number kits are the best for beginners?
For an easy paint by number’s kit, we suggest you look at our abstract range which incorporates our very popular Upside Down Giraffe kit, Happy Giraffe Kit and Vibrant Cat Kit.
All three of these paint by number designs are great for beginners and exclusive to Paint Plot
Just be sure to choose the simple designs with large sections.

- What is the best way to prepare?
Initially, choose a painting spot that is comfortable and make sure that you have good lighting. Natural lighting is best, otherwise investing in a small headlamp may be helpful.
From now on, we will be sending a paper reference kit in packages for Paint Plot customers.
Even with this paper reference, we still recommend taking a photo with your phone. This way you can zoom in if you mistakenly go over a line and you’ll have two points of reference. One of our repeat customers suggested separating your canvas into four and taking a photo of each section.
There is no right or wrong place to start painting. We'd suggest trying to paint from top to bottom commencing in the top left-hand corner (the opposite for left handers) as it is the best way to avoid any smudging with your palms.
Ensure you leave enough time between colors for the paints to dry.
Water, paper towelling or wipes are your new friends.
Water is handy to not only clean your brushes between colors but it’s also useful to keep them moist. The paints can become a little dry if the pots are open for too long, dipping the brush into water can stop the application becoming too thick.
Paper towelling is useful for anything and everything but in this instance you can dry and clean your brushes between colors or it’s just handy if you spill a little paint.
Some of our customers tell us that wipes are very useful to clean the paint off the brushes between colors.
- Is it best to stretch/frame before or after?
There is no rule when it comes to framing your Paint Plot canvas, it’s very much personal choice.
Some of our customers like to frame first, others prefer to frame afterwards. We have added the link here to help with this process.
This includes a YouTube video on how to put the frame together.
- Is it better to paint on an Easel or table top?
From personal experience and customer feedback an easel and magnifying glass are very helpful, especially for the more detailed kits like Cinque Terre or Colorful Park.
Many of our customers use a foam board, cork board or A2 clip board. If you decide to frame/stretch after painting, the boards are handy for stability, rotating and making your canvas mobile to enable you to change positions throughout the process.
Make sure you have either a comfortable chair if working on an easel or a table that is high enough for you not to bend down too much.
- What shall I do with all the artwork?
Display it of course! Paint by numbers kits look amazing hanging on your wall. Make sure you hang your art in a light filled space to really show them off.
If you have a few, you could think about dedicating a whole wall or giving these as gifts to friends or family.
